That is a very interesting question that you bring up. I believe that I have some what of an answer. Now from my understanding, one of the tzars was ripped out of his mothers whom with forecips which left him with a crippled left arm. Now rulers in Europe were supposed to have this appeal or appearance of "unbreakable", or "immortal", now by covering his left hand he was able to hid his disability to seem all the more powerful. Now it seems that Hitler followed this tradition to follow in the footsteps of the ruthless leaders of Germany.
Good call on the Kaiser, Scott. The Kaiser was injured when he was born as he had to be wrenched out of his mother using a tool called forceps (don't google it; it's gross). He definitely tried to mask his dead arm his entire life.
In regards to Hitler, some people speculate that he had some form of mental disorder, perhaps Parkinson's Disease, which would cause him to have tremors. These tremors would make his hand visibly shake, so he always would hold onto something, grip his left hand, or have it behind his back.
Maybe if the Germans had a leader who wasn't really old, or had some strange disability, they could have avoided wars and been a truly "great" country?
